St. Mary Catholic School

International Exchange Program

In partnership with the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, St. Mary’s School participates in an international exchange program with students from the Stella Maris School in Madrid, Spain. This program deepens the students’ understanding of other cultures, hones our students' Spanish language skills while providing practice for Stella Maris students to speak English, and encourages friendships between Spanish and American students. In addition to hosting several students from Stella Maris at St. Mary during the academic year, St. Mary School also sends students to Spain each year. The entire student body benefits from the close relationship between St. Mary School and Stella Maris School. St. Mary students are assigned “pen pals” from Stella Maris and write to their Spanish counterparts several times during the school year. In our classrooms, the students Skype with a partner class at Stella Maris, often to share cultural celebrations. Finally, St. Mary’s boasts an excellent Spanish language program, made even stronger by the participation of Stella Maris students.

In addition, St. Mary Parish participates in an exchange program over the summer with Catholic students from Spain. Through this program, our parish families - including St. Mary School families - have the opportunity to open their lives to a new culture, language and new friendships. Parish and school families currently have the opportunity to host a Spanish student and/or participate in the program by taking Spanish classes and attending field trips with the exchange students over the summer. With enough interest, we hope to offer trips to Spain for parish families (including St. Mary students) in upcoming years.
